This piece is my attempt to replicate in sound the feeling of surrendering to unconsciousness. It’s a feeling we all know well, that of laying in bed and forgoing the insecurities and anxieties of the day to a comforting loss of lucidity. Yet, sometimes it doesn’t come so easily and the moments before the darkness of sleep comes can often be filled with some of the most incessant noise. In this depiction, anxious thoughts creep to the forefront of the mind, building to resounding chaos that, despite its best efforts, eventually subsides and gives way to serenity.
I created this piece using various oscillators and samplers from VCV rack. Throughout this work, you’ll hear my attempt at marrying the simple purity of Sine, Saw, Square, and Triangle waves, with the more complex sounds that I sampled from my house. The most noticeable of course is the sound of birds which signify both the literal astronomical dusk, and that of the transition from the state of consciousness to that of unconsciousness. You’ll also hear the sounds of coffee mugs being smacked with metal spoons, chairs dragged against wood floors, and boiling water. The small reminders of our daily routine, whether audible in their original form or not, remind us of the calm that will come after the anxiety fades away.
