Every night at 11:00PM, there is a couple who walk around my street. This image, combined with a growing sense of isolation, led to the text. I’ve never seen their faces, so I decided to give the lonely walking people some characteristics you wouldn’t see in most people, like this interaction with the Dark as a Thing. I imagined a giant shapeless mass of black energy that lives within and without the people. I recited the text into my phone, taking pauses to cough and drink coffee. Then, I recorded the mixer part, modifying the sound from the phone and interjecting with feedback. Last, I recorded the drum sounds (I have contact mics on a snare drum, floor tom, and cymbal going into the mixer. I also took off a hi-hat cymbal and pushed it up against the snare’s mic to get some of the sounds). As I play this tune more, I can manipulate the voice recording, the feedback, and the percussion sounds all at once in a way that feels ALIVE and PRESENT.
